Hwange National Park

Hwange National Park Overview

Hwange National Park is Zimbabwe's largest national park and one of Southern Africa's great wildlife areas. Covering approximately 14,650 square kilometres in northwestern Zimbabwe, the park protects an enormous wilderness of grasslands, teak woodland, mopane forest and seasonal waterholes.

Hwange is particularly famous for its elephants and supports one of Zimbabwe's largest elephant populations. During the dry season, impressive herds gather around the park's waterholes, creating some of the most memorable elephant viewing in Africa.

The park is also excellent for predators. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, spotted hyenas and African wild dogs inhabit Hwange, alongside buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and an impressive variety of antelope including sable and roan.

With around 100 mammal species and close to 400 bird species, Hwange offers tremendous wildlife diversity across a vast and varied landscape. :contentReference[oaicite:3]{index=3}

Safaris are normally explored by 4WD game vehicle, moving between the park's different habitats and waterholes. Depending on your chosen lodge or camp, guided walking safaris and time at wildlife hides may also be available.

Hwange also combines beautifully with Victoria Falls, making it possible to experience both a classic Zimbabwe safari and one of Africa's most spectacular natural wonders within the same journey.

Best time of the year to visit

Hwange can be visited throughout the year, but the dry season is particularly rewarding for wildlife viewing as animals concentrate around the park's waterholes.

From roughly June through October, vegetation becomes drier and wildlife is often easier to locate, with large elephant herds frequently gathering at water sources.

The greener months bring lush landscapes, dramatic skies, young animals and excellent birdwatching. This can also be a beautiful time for travellers who prefer fewer vehicles and a greener safari environment.
